Digital pianos

The digital piano has gained more and more interest over the years. The digital piano is mainly used by novice users. These kinds of instruments are therefore a very good practice instrument for debutants.

What is a digital piano?

A digital piano is designed to mimic the same characteristics as an acoustic piano, but then digitally. There are also additional features available on a digital piano. For example, the digital piano makes it possible to record your own piano playing and listen to it. This is particularly useful for the novice players who are practicing with lesson material. Another feature that many people find useful and fun about the digital piano is the creation of different sounds, like organ and stings.

Difference between a digital and an acoustic piano

A digital piano creates digital sound when a key is pressed. When you press a key on an acoustic piano, sound is produced by the hammers hitting the strings. A digital piano doesn’t have hammers and strings, but sends a signal to the digital system when a key is pressed. The built-in digital system converts the delivered signal into sound. The sounds coming from a digital piano are so-called samples. These samples are recorded sound fragments of an acoustic piano that are played when the corresponding key is pressed.

However, a digital piano is always different from a (real) acoustic piano.

Advantages of digital piano

Are you a piano lover but not an advanced piano player? Then a digital piano is a very good choice. Read below about the advantages it can offer you:

* A big advantage of digital pianos is that you don't have to tune your piano, so a digital piano is always at the right pitch. This saves you yearly money on tuning.

* Digital pianos are a lot lighter and less high than acoustic pianos. This makes it much easier to move the digital pianos within your home.

* Digital pianos come standard with a headphone. This allows you to practice without disturbing others.

* The possibility to adjust the volume yourself.

* With a digital piano, you can choose from many different sounds.

* Finally, a digital piano is cheaper in the purchase price than an acoustic piano. This makes the instrument very suitable for novice piano players.

Difference between a digital piano and a keyboard?

It is common to confuse a digital piano with a keyboard. Both instruments can be connected to a computer and produce electronic sounds. Although the instruments are similar in a number of ways, they are very different instruments.

Keyboards often contain 49 or 61 keys. A digital piano has 76 or 88 keys. In addition, the keys of a digital piano are imitated from an acoustic piano. This makes the keys heavier and gives much more resistance than the keys of a keyboard. This makes it possible to hold certain sounds longer on a digital piano with the help of pedals. This is not possible with a keyboard, because a keyboard does not have pedals. With a keyboard, every sound has the same length.

Besides the fact that there is a lot of difference in the touch of the keys on a digital piano and a keyboard, there is also a difference in the touch sensitivity. For example, a digital piano is touch sensitive and a keyboard is not. This means that when a key is lightly pressed on a digital piano, the sound of this key will also be softer. On the other hand, the sound will be louder when the keys are pressed harder. With a keyboard this is not the case and each key will produce the same sound, regardless of whether it is pressed louder or softer.

Finally, keyboards are often placed on a keyboard stand, making them playable and transportable even without a stand. Digital pianos are in most cases placed on a stand that contains standard pedals. Because a keyboard does not necessarily needs a stand, it is a lot lighter and easy to transport. Nevertheless, both instruments are relatively easy to move.
